Secure Sockets Layer Certificates or SSL's are certificates that provide a secure connection between the website user and the website and its web server.

You can normally tell if an SSL certificate is installed because your browser will display a Padlock image with the browser's address bar. Often this will be a green colour to show that the SSL is active.

SSL certificates are used to encrypt data and are often a requirement of the merchant providing a payment system to a website. SSL require the web site owner to provide ownership evidence and for this reason Search Engines such as Google reward SSL secured websites as being more trusted.
